How to play Planet Drop

Drop orbs into the jar. Whenever two of the same kind touch they merge into the single next planet up, which is bigger and worth more — two moons make a rock, two rocks make a red planet, and so on up to the star. The catch is that merging makes things larger, so the jar fills even as you clear it. You only get the five smallest orbs to drop, shown in the Next box, and if anything is left poking above the line at the top for more than a couple of seconds the run is over. Move with the mouse or the arrow keys, and click, tap or press space to let go.

The single most useful habit is to sort as you go: keep the small orbs on one side and let the big ones settle on the other, because a big planet stranded in the middle splits the jar into two cramped halves. Drop along the walls rather than into the centre — the walls hold a stack steady, while a centre drop rolls and lands wherever it likes. Watch for chains: if a merge creates a planet next to a twin of the new size, that merges too, and a well-set-up column can cascade four or five times from one drop. When the jar gets tight, resist the urge to drop fast; the physics needs a moment to settle, and half the game overs come from stacking on top of something that was still rolling.
